Background of the Study

Indigenous religion in Ife Central has long served as a moral compass for its people, guiding behavior, social norms, and community values. Rooted in ancestral beliefs and rituals, these traditional religious practices are intricately linked to the moral development of individuals from early childhood through adulthood (Ogunlesi, 2023). In contemporary society, however, the rise of formal education, globalization, and the influence of major world religions have introduced new moral frameworks, potentially challenging the traditional moral codes propagated by indigenous religions (Ajani, 2024). Many community members still adhere to age-old practices, finding in them a sense of identity, purpose, and ethical guidance. Conversely, there is concern that the diminishing role of indigenous religion may lead to moral relativism and a weakening of community cohesion (Balogun, 2025). This study evaluates the current role of indigenous religious practices in shaping moral values in Ife Central, investigating how these practices interact with modern influences and contribute to ethical social development (Folarin, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

The relevance of indigenous religion in moral development in Ife Central is increasingly questioned as modern educational and religious influences permeate daily life (Akin, 2023). Traditional moral values rooted in indigenous practices are under threat from competing ethical frameworks, leading to concerns over moral decay and social fragmentation. This study seeks to identify the extent to which indigenous religious practices continue to shape moral development and to explore the challenges and opportunities for integrating traditional ethical teachings with modern societal norms (Ogunlesi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To assess the influence of indigenous religion on moral development.

2. To examine the interaction between traditional and modern moral frameworks.

3. To recommend ways to integrate indigenous ethics into contemporary education.

Research Questions:

1. How does indigenous religion shape moral values in Ife Central?

2. What challenges arise from the interaction of traditional and modern moral frameworks?

3. How can indigenous ethics be effectively integrated into modern societal structures?

Research Hypotheses:

1. H1: Indigenous religious practices positively influence moral development.

2. H2: Modern influences weaken traditional moral codes.

3. H3: Educational interventions can bridge traditional and modern ethical systems.

Significance of the Study

This study provides insights into the role of indigenous religion in moral formation, offering a basis for policy recommendations that strengthen traditional ethical teachings within modern education systems. Its findings will be valuable to educators, religious leaders, and policymakers (Ajani, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to evaluating the role of indigenous religion in moral development in Ife Central Local Government Area, Osun State, focusing exclusively on local indigenous practices.

Definitions of Terms:

• Indigenous Religion: Traditional spiritual beliefs and practices native to a community.

• Moral Development: The process through which individuals acquire values and ethical standards.

• Ethical Integration: The blending of traditional moral values with modern ethical frameworks.
